Homecoming (science fiction)

Homecoming (science fiction)

There is not much to do alone on a fourteen month space flight especially when the computer does all the systems checks for you. That’s why there are mandatory virtual reality sessions, but be careful not to get too attached. Homecoming is a great story with a twist in the style of the original Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits.

Type: short story
Genre: science fiction
Content rating: PG-
Synopsis:
An astronaut must endure a long flight back to Earth on a British space craft alone after the Co-Pilot has died and all communications with England have been lost. Accompanied by the traditional Chimp on board, the astronaut, Hershel, has nothing to do but routine systems checks (the on board computer does them anyway) and participate in the mandatory Virtual Reality sessions to counter act the social deprivation experienced on long space flights. The computer mistakenly loads his dead co-pilot’s VR but Hershel decides to make the Co-Pilot’s VR world his own.

If you long for a fun short story that’s not overly complicated or too techy this will be a good read for you. HOMECOMING brings back memories of some of the old 40′s and 50′s classics from the likes of A.E. Van Vogt. But you don’t have to be a sci fi junkie to appreciate the storytelling. As our quest for deeper space becomes more imminent, the author adds a unique twist on virtual reality and realistic applications that it will have for the survival and sanity of near future astronauts. I hope you find it as interesting and surprising as I did.

Given a previously read 5 star rating, I was surprised by this short story. It is way too short. It just ends after a brief setup.
